In September 2016 The Welcome Rest was commissioned through A Clifftop Wander - Margate Coastal Park celebration 2016 with the support of Arts Council England and Kent County Council.
Within the beautiful Palm Bay seaside shelter in Clifftonville I photographed passing dogs and their walkers.
The relationship and bond between the human and canine becomes quickly evident. The dogs always take the portrait seriously (unlike many of the owners...), always they look to camera and hold the gaze. This series repeatedly challenges (mis)perceptions; a vulnerable man embracing his large, fiercesome dog telling me ‘he’s a rescue dog – he rescued me’ – a tiny seemingly timid chihuahua jumps off the bench and squares up to a passing staffie...
These are knowingly modest portraits – but arguably reward scrutiny, showing as they do how lives are enhanced and conversations initiated through dog ownership.
More from this series will be added to the 'work' section of this website shortly.
Below are installations shots of the day, many of which were taken by Margate photographer Jason Pay.
